Can Gio Biosphere Reserve is located in the coastal district southeast of Ho Chi Minh City. The forest is about 75,740 hectares and is occupied by mangrove trees, saltwater, and an extensive river network. The mangrove forests have more than 200 species of fauna and 52 species of flora; monkeys and gibbons, crocodiles, bats, birds, fish and shellfish species etc. The forest hosts the highest diversity of mangrove plant species, mangrove-dwelling invertebrates and mangrove-associated fish and shellfish species in the sub-region and is regarded as the ‘green lungs of the city. Since the mangroves received the tourism development, including the buffer zone of the Can Gio Mangrove Biosphere Reserve and infrastructures for the areas, the ecotourism of Vam Sat had become one of the most tourist attractions in Southern Vietnam. It is perfect for travelling by speed boat to the forest, experience life on waterways, taking sampan through water palms, mangroves on water channels, and enjoying a walk through the jungle.
