Can Gio Biosphere Reserve is located in the coastal district southeast of Ho Chi Minh City. The forest is about 75,740 hectares and is occupied by mangrove trees, saltwater, and an extensive river network. The mangrove forests have more than 200 species of fauna and 52 species of flora; monkeys and gibbons, crocodiles, bats, birds, fish and shellfish species etc. The forest hosts the highest diversity of mangrove plant species, mangrove-dwelling invertebrates and mangrove-associated fish and shellfish species in the sub-region and is regarded as the ‘green lungs of the city.
